How an Auto Open/Close Lid Works
A self-closing toilet lid works from a motion sensor built into the back of the seat: it detects you approaching the toilet, drives the lid up, and lowers it again once you step away. TOTO describes the feature on the WASHLET S7A as a "touchless auto open/close lid," and the Ultra NOVA bidet toilet seat uses the same motion-activated approach. Nothing is added to your plumbing to make it work — the motor and sensor live inside the seat itself, which is why the feature only exists on electric models.
A second sensor does quieter work. The Ultra NOVA activates its wash and dry functions only when the seat is occupied, so a passing pet or a bumped remote does not start a spray cycle. Which TOTO WASHLET Has Auto Open?
The TOTO WASHLET with auto open is the S7A. TOTO's own S7-series announcement draws the line between the two models this way: the S7A has sensor operation with auto open/close, and the S7 does not. Otherwise the two seats are close siblings — same EWATER+ wand and bowl cleaning, same PREMIST, same warm air dryer, same heated seat — so the lid is what you are paying the difference for. Measure the bowl before you choose
Auto-lid seats are shape-specific, and returning one is a nuisance. Measure from the two seat-bolt holes at the back of the bowl to the front rim: about 16.5 inches is a round bowl, about 18.5 inches is elongated. Standard bolt spread is around 5-1/2 inches. The S7A is sold in both shapes, so a small bathroom is not automatically out; the Ultra NOVA is elongated only, and mounts on bolt spacing between 4.6 and 7.2 inches. Leave the lid room to travel
A sensor lid swings on its own, so clearance matters more than it does on a manual seat. The S7A needs at least 2 inches of clearance behind the seat for the tank, and it needs a grounded 120-volt outlet within three feet of the toilet. If there is no outlet beside your toilet, that is an electrician's job, not a plumber's, and it is worth pricing before you order. The seat itself mounts on the same two bolt holes as your current seat and taps the existing fill line with a T-valve.
Decide whether you also want auto flush
The auto lid and the auto flush are separate systems. The S7A is auto flush capable with an optional auto flush kit, but only when installed on select TOTO toilets — the seat cannot flush a bowl it was not designed to talk to. If a fully hands-free trip matters to you, check the pairing first, or shop auto flush bidets and toilets, where the two features already ship together.
Look at what else comes in the box
Sensor lids sit at the upper end of the seat market, and the models that carry one tend to carry everything else too: instant, unlimited warm water rather than a small reservoir, a warm air dryer, a heated seat, a deodorizer, a night light, and a remote that stores settings per user.
