Which Toilets Work with the WASHLET S7A

The WASHLET S7A works with elongated toilets, and TOTO states it is "compatible with both traditional and WASHLET+ toilet bowls." TOTO makes the seat in elongated only, describing it as designed to fit an elongated bowl — an oval measuring 18.5 inches from the mounting holes to the front of the rim. Measure yours before you commit: about 16.5 inches means a round bowl, and no S7A will fit it.

Every toilet in this collection is sold as a WASHLET+ set, which is a narrower thing than an S7A sitting on a toilet. TOTO designs WASHLET+ bowls around the seat so the supply line and power cord route out of sight — TOTO's own description is an integrated toilet and WASHLET with "no protruding pipes or cords." Put the same seat on a traditional bowl and it washes identically, but the hose and cord stay visible behind it.

Contemporary or Classic

TOTO makes the S7A in two versions, Contemporary (SW4736AT40) and Classic (SW4734AT40). The wash, the controls and the feature list are the same on both; the difference is the shape of the lid and how it sits against the bowl. What the S7A Has That the S7 Does Not

The S7A differs from the S7 in two features: an automatic open and close lid, and what TOTO's comparison chart calls a remote controlled seat. Those two rows are marked for the S7A alone — no other seat on TOTO's WASHLET comparison chart, the S7 included, carries either one. That is the entire difference, and it is worth knowing before you pay for it.

Everything else is shared between the two seats. Both are listed with:

  • Instantaneous water heating, so the warm wash is heated as it passes through rather than drawn from a small stored reservoir
  • Five settings each for water temperature, water pressure, air temperature and seat temperature
  • Rear, soft rear, front and wide front cleanse, with oscillating and pulsating modes
  • PREMIST, which TOTO describes as wetting "the surface of the toilet bowl, aiding in the removal of waste and resulting in a better clean"
  • EWATER+, where "electrolyzing water produces a sterilizing agent (hypochlorous acid) that is used to keep the wand and toilet bowl hygienic"
  • A warm air dryer, deodorizer, night light, self-cleaning wand, and a 6- or 9-hour energy-saver timer

If the automatic lid is not worth the step up, most of the same bowls are offered with the WASHLET S7. The next model down, the WASHLET S5, keeps instantaneous heating, PREMIST and EWATER+ but drops to three-setting temperature control and loses the wide front cleanse.

Which TOTO Toilet Has the Best WASHLET?

No toilet on this page has a better WASHLET than another, because they all carry the same one. The S7A is TOTO's top seat-based WASHLET, and it is identical on a Drake as it is on a Nexus. What changes from set to set is the bowl: how it looks, how high it sits, and whether it will fit your drain. Those are the decisions worth spending time on.

One-piece or two-piece

A one-piece toilet fuses the tank and bowl into a single unit, which leaves fewer joints to clean around and reads as the more modern shape. A two-piece has a separate tank and bowl bolted together at installation: easier to carry into the bathroom, and individual parts can be replaced later rather than the whole fixture. Seat height

Universal Height puts the seat about two inches higher than standard height — roughly 17 to 19 inches from the floor, against about 15 inches. TOTO encodes it in the model number: an F in the SKU means Universal Height, and two otherwise identical toilets can sit side by side differing by that one letter. Within a series, the bowl shape, flush system and water use are usually the same at both heights, so height is a comfort decision rather than a technical one.

Rough-in

Measure from the finished wall to the center of the closet bolts before you order anything. Twelve inches is the common size, but the series in this collection do not all offer alternatives, and this is where orders go wrong. Aquia IV, Aimes, Legato, Aurora, Carlyle II, Carolina II, Vespin II, Redington and Glaston reach 10 and 14 inches through a Unifit adapter, sold separately and specific to that series. Nexus offers 12 and 14 inches only — there is no 10-inch Nexus. Drake and Drake Transitional work differently again: TOTO makes a separate 10-inch model rather than an adapter, and a 10-inch Drake fits a 10-inch rough-in only. Wall-hung

The EP and AP sets skip the rough-in question entirely. A wall-hung toilet mounts on an in-wall carrier, so there is no floor drain position to match — but the carrier has to go into the wall before it is tiled, which makes these a remodel decision rather than a swap.

It runs on its own rather than on a button you press. TOTO publishes no duration or effectiveness figure for it, so treat it as upkeep between cleanings, not a substitute for them.

A WASHLET+ S7A set is installed as a complete toilet rather than as a seat swap.
