Tall Toilets

Tall toilets — also sold as comfort height, chair height or TOTO's Universal Height — put the seat about 17 to 19 inches from the floor, roughly two inches higher than a standard toilet. Standing up takes noticeably less effort, which is why they have become the usual choice for most adults and the common recommendation for anyone with reduced mobility.

Who should choose a tall toilet

  • Anyone over about 5'10", who will find a standard toilet low.
  • Older users, or anyone with knee, hip or back problems — standing up is easier.
  • Bathrooms that need to meet ADA requirements.
  • Most adults. It is now the more common choice in new builds.

A standard height toilet still makes sense for households with small children, or for anyone under about 5'4" whose feet would not reach the floor comfortably.

Tall toilets with a bidet

Every toilet here can take a bidet seat, and many are sold with one already fitted. If you are choosing a tall toilet for comfort or accessibility reasons, a bidet is worth considering at the same time — it removes most of the reaching and twisting that toilet paper involves.

A note on wall-hung toilets

You will not find wall-hung models in this collection. They mount on an in-wall carrier with an adjustable height range, so the installer decides where the seat sits — they can be tall or standard depending on how they are fitted.

How tall is a standard toilet?

A standard toilet seat sits about 15 inches from the floor. A tall toilet sits at 17 to 19 inches— roughly two inches higher, and the height ADA guidelines call for.

The difference sounds small but it changes how the toilet feels to use. A standard toilet is closer to a low stool; a tall toilet is closer to a dining chair, and standing up takes noticeably less effort.

Tall toilet height, by type

  • Standard height: About 15" — Regular height
  • Tall: 17" to 19" — Comfort height, chair height, Universal Height, ADA height
  • Extra tall — 20" to 21" — High rise

Height is measured from the floor to the top of the seat, with the seat down. Adding a bidet seat raises it by roughly half an inch to an inch, which matters if you are near the limit of what feels comfortable.
